With Winter collections filling the shops and the selection process for the perfect winter coat well under way, it’s safe to say the changing of seasons is in full effect. Those once bright sneakers you picked up for the warmer months are beginning to look a little sad by now and you begin to remember that – although they look great – technical, lightweight running shoes just aren’t going to cut it in the Winter. Cold toes are no fun for anyone.
At first, dressing for Winter feels a bit of a minefield, a distant memory you were happy to leave behind at the start of BST. It can be a bit of a pain at times, but we’re very lucky to be able to enjoy different seasons in Europe. It’s time to embrace Autumn Winter.
This time round, we’re starting with the basis of your Winter look, working from the ground up with footwear. I can’t quite stress the importance of practical Winter footwear, at risk of sounding like your mother. Practical doesn’t need to mean boring, however. Winter boots are an investment and something that – if done right – will last years and years. Looking at a cross-section of classic and slightly more contemporary brands, feast your eyes on our favourite, classic boots to consider this Winter.
The Pointer Kinman
A new, unisex style from the London footwear brand, these moccasin style boots have a rugged, hiking feel that's finished with care for an a nice and slightly more low-key finish than other boots of this kinda style. Lovely detailing throughout, such as around the toecap, the cool, triple stitching up the outside of the boot and around the heel. Crep soles are always nice to see, with the particular shade of the boot contrasting nicely with the ivory colour of the sole. Best of all, these won't break the bank as you might expect, costing only £129.99 and available from Pointer dot com.
Red Wing Round Toe Boot
Iconic from the ground up and about as tough as they come, Red Wing boots are steeped in heritage, originally used by miners and in other heavy industries over the years. The Round Toe Boot comes in a relatively similar silhouette to a desert boot, but offers far more lasting power than suede construction might, which is important for the wetter and colder months. Red Wing Heritage use beautiful leather supplied by their own SB Tanning Company and are wax-finished for added lasting power. The Red Wing Round Toe Boot comes in at £229 and can be picked up from End Clothing.
Kickers Kick Hi
If you grew up in 80’s or 90’s Britain, you are sure to remember Kickers. Iconic boots rooted in rave culture, the Kick Hi oozes everyday, understated cool. Perfect if you are worried about Winter boots feeling or looking bulky, for Autumn Winter ‘16, the Kick Hi comes in all over blues, greens and reds, laces and triple-Stitch n’all. The Kickers Kick Hi are a rather reasonable £85 and can be found at ASOS.
Converse Chuck Taylor ‘70 Hi
You might be surprised to see Chuck’s making the list, but the heel-high nature of this iconic style makes for a practical style for Winter in the city. Chuck Taylor 1970s have subtle differences to your average All Stars, such as added cushioning, higher rubber foxing and a more substantial toebox, making for a more practical Winter wear. Each season, the colours of the Chuck Taylor 1970 released are a little different from the norm, with the above Emerald Green our personal favourite this time round. You can pick these bad boys up for £65 at the likes of Size?
